I’ve just finished reading James Daniel Ross’ novel, “The Chimerium Gambit”, part of the Radiation Angels series. Without giving anything away, the series is about a band of mercenaries and its leader, Captain Todd Rook. In a universe where mercenaries are essentially a-dime-a-dozen, the Radiation Angels have the advantage of their own ship, a few cyborgs, and a commander with brains. In the opening scenario, they’re hired to capture a planetary President, get attacked by another band made up exclusively of heavy ‘borgs, and make it out mostly intact, with their prisoner and a startling discovery. The Admiral that hired them charges them with Breach of Contract and theft of a very advanced tech. The rest of the story is Captain Rook’s efforts to protect the Angels, clear the charges, and simply stay alive. The worst part comes when the single surviving ‘borg of ‘The Tribe of Nine’ comes seeking revenge for his lost crew.
Pick up this book and get set for an engrossing read. With action on nearly every page, you won’t want to put it down.
