TIGER!

September 20, 2009

Today my wife and I visited our local book superstore. While I was nosing through the Sci-Fi Fantasy section (which they had just moved from one side of the store to the other, and mis-hung the location sign because the books are not under the dropped ceiling tiles, the frames of which are used to hang their signs) I realized that I’ve been going about Tiger and Fox all wrong! Over and over again, people were saying that Antoinette was taking over the story, despite the fact that, to me, Tracker was the main character. Tracker is the one growing. Tracker is the one learning how to be a person, despite his differences. But how do you show the main character changing when you’re seeing it from his point of view? The one changing quite often never realizes that he’s changing!

So maybe everyone is right, but for a different reason; rather than watching Antoinette from Tracker’s point of view, why not watch Tracker from Antoinette’s point of view? This would even help cover a lot of other plotlines that right now seem more forced into the story rather than flowing through their lives in a natural progression.

My friends, it may take a bit, but the next new writing you see (other than what I might put into Fox Flight) will be entitled: Tiger!

Read the first 8 chapters of “Tiger!”. Honestly, I have mixed feelings about it. So far, I think the original version made a better telling of the story. Hopefully the next time we get a chance to chat in real-time, we can discuss it.
